Which Rope for Gin Wheels
As mentioned above the many varieties of rope can have you going round in circles. We use sisal rope with a ¾ inch diameter for our gin wheel because it not only fits the wheel recess perfectly but has specific properties which work well with this type of lifting task and better handling for the user.
Polypropylene, nylon and polyester rope, whilst strong can prove to be a little slippery when handling. With sisal, a natural fibre rope made from the Agave plant has a slightly rougher texture and thus is easier to grip and pull on. It is flexible, easy to handle and can hold knots well.
Another benefit to using sisal as a pulley rope is its slight elasticity, meaning it has a little stretch which can reduce stress and shocks on the rope and load. With good resistance to outdoor conditions sisal really is a good choice and works well with the gin wheel.
