Spreader beams and lifting beams are two different types of steel beam used for aiding the lifting of wider loads. Both our modular spreader beam and multi point lifting beam systems can handle loads up to 110 tonne.
Spreader Beams and Lifting Beams – The Differences
With both types the beams connect to a hoisting device from the top with the load suspended underneath, however the top connection is the key difference. Careful consideration must be given to the top anchor point in conjunction with the type of load you are lifting and how.
A spreader beam is so called because the beam anchors to the lifting hoist at both ends, thus spreading the weight of the load by means of compressive stress, whilst affording a more stable lift. A lifting beam on the other hand typically has just one top anchor point (the singular stress point) which must be central to the line of gravity to be stable.
Both types of beams have their own benefits though your choice will greatly depend on the configuration of your lifting operation.
Standard varieties of these beams tend to be manufactured from one piece of steel with anchoring eyes located at strategic points. The type of spreader beams and lifting beams you will see at Lifting Gear Store are a little different, more forward thinking and without a doubt more versatile.
Our Modular Spreader Beams
Rather than being made from one steel beam our versatile, modular spreader beam system consists of multiple, tubular steel sections which can be bolted together. There are a number of benefits to this design, the first being it is easier to store and transport when disassembled. Secondly the beam can be altered in length by omitting one or more sections. The steel sections are available in differing lengths up to 4 metres, however they are not all suited to all capacities; see more on the modular spreader beam product page.
Multi-Point Lifting Beam
Not just your typical lifting beam, our multi point option enables your lift to be set up in a number of different ways, including a semi-spreader configuration. One or two top lifting points can be used in multiple positions, the same goes for the loading underneath. Remember the laws of gravity, your positions should be equidistant for optimum stability.
Just like the modular spreader beams this type is also modular and comes in 3 sections, you can use them all or just one or two depending on the length you require
The multi point lifting beam product page will give you loads more information and specifications.
More Lifting Frame Types
Spreader beams and lifting beams are ideal for those larger, wider loads but there are other types of lifting frames that are commonly used for lifting loads. These frameworks are typically associated with cranes and are known as lifting gantries or a-frame gantry systems. However they are not lifted like the beams, instead they provide a frame from which to lift from.
Lifting slings of all varieties can also be supplied along with any lifting shackles you may need.
