Container lifting lugs come in a variety of formats and enable steel containers to be lifted in different ways. Lifting slings and shackles can also be supplied to compliment your chosen lifting lugs.

Types of Container Lifting Lugs

Container lifting lugs are designed differently and depends on which anchor point on the container you wish to fix to. Typically they will either anchor into the top of the container or into the sides (top or bottom).

Container lugs are easy to fit and use, regardless of the type chosen. The lugs simply push into the anchor recess point on the container and then with a simple twist, they are securely locked into place. They are always used in sets of 4 lugs for load stability.

Top Lifting Container Lugs

Top Lifting container advantage

The top lifting lugs we supply are from the Yale brand, the CLT top lifting lugs can handle up to 56000kg load capacities when used as a set of four. This type can also be used with a spreader frame for optimum load stability. A frame is recommended for the Yale CLT lugs because they should only be used for vertical lifting, not angles. The spreader frame will enable slings to be attached at angles.

The biggest advantage to the top lifting method is that containers can be placed or lifted out from the middle of a tight stack.

Side Lifting Container Lugs

When it comes to lifting containers from the side there are two scenarios (depending on the container anchor point locations). The lugs can be fitted into either the top or bottom on the long side.

Top lifting from the sides is probably the simplest method and ideal for empty containers due to the angled positioning of the slings which places stress on the bottom of the container.

The bottom lifting method is one of the most stable when used in conjunction with a spreader beam at the top. Lifting slings anchor to the lugs in their bottom location and pass up the container sides, thus offering extra protection. The slings will anchor to the top spreader beam which may have one or two lifting points for the crane to lift from. This method minimises both sling and container stress points, thus a safer and more stable lift.

Make sure you order two left and two right lugs – they fit differently. The Cobra Lifting Lugs we supply can handle 12.5 tonnes each.

The Yale CLB lugs can handle 50000kg in a vertical lift or 32000kg with a 50 degree sling angle.

Handling containers should be done with great care whilst always following HSE guidelines and safety in ports guidance
